Avoid Cancer Causing Carcinogens When Grilling Meat

Spring is coming, Spring is coming!

and many of us can't wait to get outside to grill up some delicious meals. Grilling is one of America's favorite ways to cook and if it keeps us at home for dinner than I'm all for it!

Except...there is some pretty solid evidence showing when cooking at a high temperature like on a grill it increases cancer causing carcinogens.

The good news is I've learned how to reduce those bad boys up to 90%. Basically, you get to have your steak and eat it too! Can I get a collective high-five ^^

This is a very simple process and there is even a bonus in it for you. After you've selected your favorite cut of meat, ribeye would be mine, open a bottle of red wine. Blend a cup of the red wine with a 1/2 cup of olive oil. Boost the flavor without adding the calories by tossing in a spice or two. Place the meat in a glass dish and cover it. Put it in the fridge for at least 6 hours or you can leave it in overnight.

Italian Chicken Recipe

I like cooking in the oven on these cold winter days. 

I looked at my weeks schedule and realized it was going to be a tough week to cook full meals unless I planned for them. As I was looking over the Sunday grocery store ads so I could figure out this weeks menu I heard on the news how cold it was going to be. That helped me narrow down what to cook, or at least how to cook.

Making dinner in the oven is wonderful for a couple of reasons. One, I am often chilly and walk around in the winter like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, all bundled up. When I have the oven on it warms up the house and I can remove my top layer for a couple of hours. The other reason is how good the house smells. The aromas of what is being baked fills the house and just has a comfort effect for me.

2 Tips to Prevent Getting the Flu

Head this nasty flu off by implementing these two things!

We all know to wash our hands and wipe off all the handles around the house when someone has been sick, including the toilet handle. We've been told to eat more foods with Vitamin C and make a pot of fresh chicken soup. These are all great things to do.

One that I add to this list is to wash my hands after I've ordered from a menu when eating out. I always imagine someone who just coughed all over it or a snotty sticky child holding it. I know, gross. This has been something I've done for years, after ordering and handing the menus to the waiter I get up and thoroughly wash my hands before eating. I am also that person who wraps a napkin around the condiment bottle and shakers for the same reasons. 

I don't use antibacterial stuff other then the wipes at the grocery stores for the cart handles.  I think we need to be exposed to some germs to keep our immune system from sleeping on the job. Good 'ol warm water and...

Gorgonzola and Pear Pasta~#mamaleesa style~

If you're tired of the same 'ol same 'ol boring dinner try this pasta meal

One of my biggest faults...I get bored very easily...routine is not my style and I especially get bored with eating the same foods. So I don't! I mix them up and try new things. My family never complained so I'm guessing they were ok with it. At least they were always thankful for a hot homecooked meal. This has also been a blessing because we have enjoyed many different foods and combination of foods. 

My recent experiment was with ravioli. If you've followed me you know I like to shop at Aldi's. They are the brother of Trader Joes. It is a no-frills shopping experience. Quick, Easy and Inexpensive! Another reason I like them is if you take time to look around you'll see interesting foods, some have become a staple in my cupboard. Anyway, I rarely look at frozen foods because I like to cook from fresh, however, one-day last week I saw a gorgonzola and pear ravioli and thought huh...different...

Why Diets Don't Work!

Are You Vitamin 'D-ficient'?

Well, it's here...the winter season is in full swing

this means many of us are staying indoors more to avoid the cold temperatures and biting winds. Which sounds like a good idea, right? 

Yes, this does reduce the exposure to those blustery days but it also can cause some health issues. According to the journal Nutrition Research, close to 42% of the adults in the U.S. are low in Vit D throughout the year with this number rising during the winter months. I would guess this is true especially here in the midwest where the humidity levels are higher which makes the lower temperatures feel much colder. 

Harvard School of Public Health says being deficient in Vit D may increase the risk of some chronic diseases like osteoporosis, heart disease, ms and some cancers. And it can lower the immune system making it easier to get the seasonal flu.

Vit D is made by the body with exposure to natural sunlight.

OH, Yes I Did...and I'm ok with it!

Yes, I did make boxed brownies and I'm truly ok with it! 

You must be scratching your head right now wondering what happened to me to be admitting and posting that's I feel okay about making brownies.

Well here's' the truth...

I eat sweets. Not on a regular basis but I do have them. I mean hey, I'm just a mid-western gal here, I get stressed and have cravings just like anyone. All I do is live by the 85-15 rule. Around 85% of what I eat or drink is whole food. The rest is whatever I want and today I wanted brownies. 

Ok, for those of you that know me pretty well you know I will try to healthy up the not so healthy treats. I do this so I can feel better about eating them! And here is how I feel ok about my current brownie indulgence, brownies from a box off the shelf even. :-0

Ugg...I Forgot To Eat Lunch Today...not good~

Does this sound like you? 

We all have days where we are busy or preoccupied and either ignore our hunger pangs or just don't have them.  I don't usually feel hungry but I do get tired and sometimes short on patience. I know this about myself and my family knows this so they will offer a reminder if I step out of character and become a bit testy. 

I heard someone say this about the 3 meals of the day;

Eat like a King at breakfast, a Prince at Lunch and a Popper at Dinner

Why is this important to have your bigger meals of the day at the beginning instead of the end like we have all been raised to believe?  

A typical American eats dinner between 5-8 pm every evening and might have a bite of something before going to bed but it's not usually a healthy snack. Then the body fasts for the next 8-14 hours, depending if you eat breakfast or not. 

You get up and expect this machine we call a body to run on all cylinders without giving it any or good fuel....
