I wish it was as easy as making a 'healthy carb' list. Sure there are some things that make carbs "good" like getting organic, nongmo, no pesticides, grains are grown in whole soil (soil that is full of natural minerals and nutrients so the plant absorbs these as they are growing to become part of the plant).
But the truth is you need to know your body. And know your body's needs change as you age.
Instead of a list of good carbohydrates let me tell you what I have learned about them.
Without going into too much detail, first, let's look at what a carbohydrate is:
Carbohydrates (carbs) are the sugars, starches, and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables and dairy products. They are one of three macronutrients that our bodies use for energy.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), recommends a daily intake of carbs for adults to be 135 grams. Or about half of your calories should come from healthy carbs. However, NIH also suggests everyone should have their own carbohydrate intake goals depending on how fast your metabolism is and how much movement you do each day. In other words, how much energy you burn each day.
There are other considerations to take in as well like allergies and sensitivities. So you see this isn't a cookie cutter choice.
1 cup of peanuts has 24 g of carbs
1 medium strawberry has 0.9 grams
1/4 c uncooked steel-cut oatmeal 24 g
1 slice of whole wheat bread 12 g
1 cup of whole milk 12 grams
How many people do you know have sensitivities to one or more of the foods mentioned above? This is another reason you need to know your body!
Like I always say...
"Awareness Allows Choice"
That said 'good carbohydrates' are organic, non-GMO, pesticide free, whole grains, legumes, fruit, vegetables, and dairy.
Do your best to choose whole food over processed.
Processed food is more likely to have a higher content of 'bad carbs'.
