Once Again Mom Was Right When She Told Us To Take a Deep Breath and Count to 10...

I was searching the net for something and came across this...

Email Apnea was termed by Linda Stone, she had been suffering from a respiratory infection when her doc suggested a breathing technique which helped her immensely.  However, she noticed that when she started reading her emails she began holding her breath!

In my wellness practice, I've coached many people through the years on becoming aware of how they 'hold' themselves during the day and surprisingly many of them find they hold their breath.

They do this unconsciously. And it happens at different times for different people. Sometimes it's when they are in traffic, or focusing at work. It happens if someone talks to them they are uncomfortable with like their boss or a co-worker.

I've had parents tell me they've noticed they hold their breath during parent-teacher conferences.

So you see it happens a lot! But... it wasn't until I read this article on email apnea that I...

Avoid Sticker Shock! 3 Simple Tips When Buying Organic Whole Foods?

Do You Think Buying Whole Foods is Expensive

If you are one of those people who has experienced sticker shock after picking up whole organic foods then keep reading!

I have 3 things you need to know about buying Whole Organic Foods that will change your mind and get you to eat better quality foods.

#1- Don't dismiss the discount stores.

We have a store called Aldi, it's known as a discount store. There are no frills and you need to bring your own bags and a quarter to get a grocery cart. Until recently it was a cash-only store which kept a lot of people away. But I found it to be a great way to keep from overspending on things I just didn't need! They do accept credit and debit cards now but I still like shopping with cash in there.

The owners of Aldi and Trader Joes' are brothers! So that gives them so credibility right off the bat for me.

They have a small organic section of fresh fruits and veggies. Their produce section isn't very big so they get trucks...

Are You Dairy Sensitive?

My Grandsons Are Dairy Sensitive...

I've learned a lot about food sensitivities in the past few years with my grandsons both being dairy sensitive. This is something new for me, we have been a family that could eat anything at any time of the day without issues. But that all changed with the birth of my first grandson.

My daughter was nursing him full time and doing wonderfully but he would cry and hold himself in such a tight ball that I knew something wasn't right. His doctor wasn't sure and wanted to put him on formula... Then he broke out in a rash all over his body! He was only a week old! We were so concerned so I sent his photo to a good friend of mine who works with a lot of babies.

She got back to me right away saying he had a sensitivity to the dairy protein casein. My daughter became an expert on how to spot it on a label, all I knew to do was stick to whole foods because many processed foods have this ingredient in them. Then I could be sure what he was...

STOP PAIN! Know What Foods To Avoid

Food Is The Biggest Cause of Inflammation

Yes! it's true, research has proven over and over again that certain foods cause inflammation and that inflammation is one of the main reasons for pain even colitis (IBD) and it sets up the perfect environment for disease.

These foods have a high glycemic index which elevates insulin levels that then trigger several hormonal reactions some of which cause inflammation. These foods are easy to spot, well most of them are, to make it simpler to avoid but the easiest way to avoid them is to stick with whole foods. Oils are also a big culprit and not as easy to identify. Vegetable oils such as soy, corn, sunflower, safflower, or palm oil have a high concentration of the inflammatory fat, omega-6, and are low in the anti-inflammatory fat, omega-3. You have to read labels to avoid these because they are found in products from protein bars to whipped spreads.

Buy foods that are in their natural form and ones...

The #1 Tip to Stay Healthy in Your Mind, Body and Soul

Do you see her?

She is outside my window every day! I look for all the ways nature is speaking to me. Some days it might be a bird singing so loud I have to stop and listen, another day it might be the smell after a long spring rain.

I think one of the most important ways for me to stay healthy both in my emotions and in my body is to connect with Nature.

Whether we can get outside or not there is always a window to peer out. Whether you live in the middle of the wilderness or in the heart of a city you can find Nature trying to get your attention.

It doesn't matter if you need Encouragement or you just need a moment to breath Nature is always there to support you. How can Nature Encourage you? Take a walk in the spring and notice how the buds of a tree are wanting to burst open, do you think that's easy? Do you think that bud just happened on to the end of that stem or branch? Think about everything that had to go right for this bud to get in position to...

Potato Soup

I think I could eat soup a couple times a week and never get tired of it.

My mom makes the best soups, the triad of soup in our home growing up was chicken noodle, vegetable beef, and potato soup.

No matter how hard I try, even if she is next to me guiding me through the whole process my potato soup never tastes as good as hers. So I did the next best thing, I went on the hunt for a recipe that I could make. One my family would love and ask for more and I found it! Julia Childs Portage Primavera, I've also seen it called potato and leek soup, is consistently scrumptious and it feels like mom so it's my go-to comfort food.

Give it a try! It's Easy and Delicious! One thing I do differently is remove some of the potatoes before I cream the soup. Then I put them back in to have more texture and something to bite into. I hope you give this recipe a try and enjoy it as much as my family.

Don't Be Fooled!

I still want treats

Just because I choose to eat healthier doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good cookie now and then.

What it does mean is I find a way to make the treats I like healthier for me. For instance, my mom used to make chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. I love them, they are good and taste like childhood, but...they are high in sugar and butter fat. After playing around with a few different combinations I've come up with a couple variations that you might like as well as me and my family.

No Bake Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bites

These are gluten free, dairy free and nut free; *modify the ingredients to what you enjoy eating

No Bake Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bites

1 cup (dry) oatmeal (organic whole oats)
1/2 cup peanut butter (organic) *any nut butter
1 cup ground flax seeds (I buy whole flaxseeds and grind them in a dedicated coffee grinder) *chia seeds, toasted coconut ground a little
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (look for dairy free) *dried fruits, look for...

Add Flavor Without Adding Calories!!

Add Flavor Without Adding Calories!!

Herbs and Spices are the best way I know to add flavor without adding calories. Getting to know these gems will not only help you become an amazingly good cook they will help keep you and yours healthier.

Herbs are usually referred to as the leaves of the plant. Spices are typically the seeds and stems of the plant.

If you are just getting started building Your Successful Kitchen buy a couple different seasonings at a time and add one to varying foods until you get a good sense of how to use it. Snoop in the cabinets of your family and friends. Ask them how they use them. Ask to borrow one or two so you can try before you buy. Follow the suggestions on the jar but also think outside of their suggestions. I put turmeric on oatmeal. It sounds awful but it’s not bad with a spoonful of peanut and it does wonders for my skin! PS. It’s also touted to treat cancer.

Research has shown throughout the world that herbs and spices can...

Nope! It's Science

It Has To Be Science!

When I saw this image I started laughing out loud and I knew I had to share it with all of you. Because most of us have wondered how it is that we gain weight or how our weight has shifted to other places while we are pretty sure we are still behaving the same as we did when we were younger.

We believe we are still eating the same foods and the same amounts of food, but maybe not as much adult beverages ;-) We are still moving around the same amount, ok, maybe not...we probably spent more time playing a weekend pick-up game of our favorite sport or dancing the night away when we were younger, but we are running our children from one place to the other and running from work to home and in and out of the store. That's moving! Right? Right!

Well...yes and no. Maybe you are eating similar food and Yes, you are moving, which is much better than sitting all the time but... eating on the run, eating when your mind is going a million miles an hour,...
