Losing weight and maintaining that optimal weight isn't something a fad diet will fix, sure you might lose a little weight but how much did you gain back as soon as you stopped that diet? 

The answer isn't a simple one and this isn't the place dive deep into the complexities. Here I'll talk about the simple answer.

All to often fad diets and detoxes are designed to drop 1-11 lbs of water weight and fecal matter. Yea, I said it...poop. Many people have a whole lot of extra weight because they don't empty their bowels daily. (Which is one reason for chronic illnesses and acne, but that's a different post).

Are You Vitamin 'D-ficient'?

Well, it's here...the winter season is in full swing

this means many of us are staying indoors more to avoid the cold temperatures and biting winds. Which sounds like a good idea, right? 

Yes, this does reduce the exposure to those blustery days but it also can cause some health issues. According to the journal Nutrition Research, close to 42% of the adults in the U.S. are low in Vit D throughout the year with this number rising during the winter months. I would guess this is true especially here in the midwest where the humidity levels are higher which makes the lower temperatures feel much colder. 

Harvard School of Public Health says being deficient in Vit D may increase the risk of some chronic diseases like osteoporosis, heart disease, ms and some cancers. And it can lower the immune system making it easier to get the seasonal flu.

Vit D is made by the body with exposure to natural sunlight.

Yes, yes you could be. It doesn't seem right a person could be carrying around 42 extra pounds and not even know it! But it is happing all around us every day and it could be happening to you. 

No, it's not from body fat either! 

Most American's have some form of 'forward head posture' due to poor posture in general but mostly due to working at a computer, sitting in front of a TV or looking down at the phone.

I struggle with this because I worked as a massage therapist for nearly 25 years and I have a long neck, to begin with. I have done strengthen exercises and done some lengthening of my chest and anterior neck through the years by not nearly enough to correct my bad posture. Princeton University Neuroscience Institute has been doing research on how clutter affects our mind and productivity. What they've learned is worthwhile hearing about. 

This came from the January 2011 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience;

Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.
Meaning;

It's hard to focus if your surroundings have a lot going on. The clutter inhibits the brains' ability to process information. It distracts and confuses the mind.

We all know when you feel good you look better, when you look better you act better and how you act gets translated into how you carry yourself. 

Doing these 4 simple stretches before getting out of bed each morning can improve how you feel and build your confidence. The way you carry yourself is central to how you move through your day. When you have a flexible body you have a flexible mind. Little things don't seem to bother you and bigger things can be given the response they need instead of reacting out of frustrations or old habits. 

Give these stretches a try each and every morning for the next 30 days. Be sure to write down how you feel in body, mind, and spirit before you start on day 0. Then reassess on day 15 and finally on day 30.

Are you as excited as I am about the solar eclipse coming this Monday 21st?

How Do You Want To Age?

Let's face it. Each day we are another day older. Time goes on and we can't do anything about that...or...can we? 

I say YES WE CAN!! 

Ok, I know I can't really stop time, but I do believe I can age much slower. It has been proven again and again for many years that we are what we eat. We have been shown how eating refined sugars will age us faster, I've read that consuming refined sugar rusts our body from the inside out!! YIKES! Now that's a visual that stuck with me. 

We have been hearing more about how processed foods are very low in the nutrition we need to stay vibrant and healthy. 

The outrageous intake of pop/cola in our diet blows my mind!! Why? Because as far as I can read on the label it has nothing real in it! Nothing from a whole food group. 3 Tips To Survive A Summer Cold On Vacation!

I Made It! I'm Finally Here at Yosemite to Hike Amongst Our Elders...

I have wanted to hike in the forests of the oldest and biggest trees in North America for so long and I'm finally here!! But, I'm sick. I have the worst summer cold, you know the one with a raging sore throat, fever and annoying cough. Plus the achy body where all you want to do is hide in a dark room. Yeah, that one. But I've planned this week out. I have the reservations across most of central California. And I'm going to enjoy myself! Here's what I did. 

Flying into San Fransisco, going to Alcatraz and wondering the wharfs then up to wine country and then into the forest of our elders. Those majestic beautiful trees that have seen and been through so much of the history of humans here in the Pacific North West.   

But...I don't feel much like hiking miles, mostly straight up to see her wonders. Or driving hundreds of miles from the coast inward on never ending winding roads....
